WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP -- An overhead electrical wire caught fire and fell onto Route 130 last night, forcing police and firefighters to close the highway in both directions for about an hour during the evening rush hour on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday, officials said.

The Washington Township Fire Department was sent to the 1300 block of Route 130 after the electrical wire in front of Tony's Farm Market caught fire about 5:45 p.m., said fire Lt. Dennis Symons.

Route 130 was shut down between Windsor and Voelbel roads, and then the live wire burned through itself and dropped onto the ground, Symons said. He said township police detoured southbound traffic to Main Street and then back to Route 130 via Church Street, while northbound traffic was sent down Windsor Road to Perrineville Road and then back to Route 130 via Voelbel Road.

Firefighters stood by while a utility crew shut off power and removed the fallen wire, Symons said. Route 130 was reopened to traffic just before 7 p.m.
