WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP -- A man was shot to death last night in the lobby of a residential community for the physically disabled.

Police did not release the victim's name, but ruled that his death is a homicide.

At press time the gunman was still at large.

Acting Police Chief Robert Woodruff said the gunman fired one shot into the victim's upper chest after the two had some kind of dispute around 8:20 p.m.

Washington Township Emergency Medical Technicians could not resuscitate him.

At about 9:30 p.m. the victim's body still was lying in the lobby at the bottom of a three-step stairwell. His wheelchair remained at the top of the stairwell.

The victim was described by police as middle-aged man known as "Louie."

Directors of the center, known as Project Freedom, said he had lived in the 35-unit residence since it opened 10 years ago at 223 Hutchinson Road.

The suspect fled toward nearby Hamilton, driving a dark-colored vehicle, police said. Capt. Martin Masseroni said the Hamilton Police Department would assist with parts of the investigation.
