WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP -- Firefighters battled a towering two-alarm brush fire for hours yesterday -- the second one in three weeks.
The fire began about 6 p.m. near Hutchinson Road. At one point, flames reached into the air about 40 feet, burning the top of trees, said Lt. Kevin Brink, a paid firefighter with Washington Volunteer Firemen.
It was unclear what started the fire, but Al Walker, chief of Washington Volunteer Firemen, said he considers it suspicious. "But as dry as everything is in the woods, it could have been anything . . . a motorcycle, somebody camping, a cigarette. It is pretty tough to find the actual source."
On Oct. 25, more than 100 firefighters battled another brush fire that ripped through the township. The blaze off Route 33 at the opposite end of town took two days to extinguish and burned many acres.
Yesterday's fire burned about three acres, firefighters said. No homes were threatened and the blaze burned only trees and brush.
One firefighter suffered an injured knee and was treated at the fire site, Walker said.
Firefighters did not finish fighting the blaze until 10:25 p.m.
