FIRE HYDRANT TESTING KEEPS YOU SAFE AND SAVES YOU MONEY

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP (Mercer)—November 2, 2000. In an effort to help taxpayers reduce insurance costs by lowering the Township’s ISO (Insurance Service Organization) rating firefighters have been testing fire hydrants in town. To get full ISO credit for a water system fire hydrants need to be tested twice a year. Previously Consumers Water NJ conducted the testing once a year and now the fire department will be testing the system an additional one time a year. This will allow for two full tests on the water system per year as per the requirements. The testing started in early October and testing on over 340 fire hydrants will be completed by mid November.

Firefighters found several caps rusted on the hydrants that needed to be removed using a hammer and long handled fire hydrant wrench. All caps are removed, water flowed until the barrel of the hydrant is clean, hydrant is checked for drainage and lubed if necessary.
