WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP (MERCER)—Firefighters responded to a structure fire at the Windsor Motel, Cottage #1 located at 1290 Route 130 at 10:04 a.m., November 22, 2000. Firefighters arrived at 10:10 and found a heavy smoke condition in the roof area of the cottage. A thermal imaging camera was used to locate the fire above the ceiling. Firefighters quickly cut through the ceiling to get to the fire. The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes. Crews remained on scene for about an hour and a half to assist the resident remove belongings and check for hot spots. The American Red Cross was notified to provide housing for 2 adults and 4 children who became homeless due to the fire. Fire Departments responding to the scene were, Washington Township Fire Department, East Windsor Fire Company #1, East Windsor Fire Company #2, Groveville Fire Company and West Windsor Fire Company. The Hightstown First Aid Squad responded to the scene for medical standby.
Captain David C. Horsnall who serves as the township’s fire marshal said, “The fire started in an electrical junction box above the ceiling in the kitchen area.”
He also said, “The fire spread to the joists and was quickly extinguished by firefighters.”
