WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP -- A woman was sent to the hospital yesterday after she lost control of her car and it struck a tree, police said.

Kelly Saitta, 27, of South Brunswick, was driving on Route 539 near Sharon Road at about 8:15 p.m. when her car went airborne and struck a tree head-on, said Officer Shawn Emmons.

Saitta was extricated by firefighters from the Washington Fire Department and sent by ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton. Her injuries were not considered serious, Emmons said.

Saitta's car was destroyed and her injuries would have been serious if not for her seat belt and air bag, Emmons said.

It was unclear yesterday why Saitta lost control of her car. The accident remains under investigation.
