WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP (Mercer County)—A lightning
strike caused a fire at Tony’s Farm Market in the Windsor Section of the
Township the evening of Monday, August 7, 2000. The fire started when a thunder
storm rolled through out the area, several residents reported hearing the
lightning strike just before the call came in. Firefighters responded and were
met with a heavy fire condition in a storage shed behind the farm market.
Gasoline cans, propane, chemicals and a large amount of combustible materials
were stored in the shed. It only took a few minutes to knock down the flames,
but the firefighters remained on scene for over one hour cleaning up the mess
and knocking down hot spots. The Washington Township Fire Department, East
Windsor Fire Company, responded to the scene. The Hightstown First Aid Squad and
Allentown First Aid Squad stood by at the scene.
