WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP -- Firefighters had to extricate a woman from the wreckage of her car after it was struck broadside by another vehicle Thursday afternoon.

The accident occurred about 1:05 p.m. at the intersection of Robbinsville-Edinburg Road (Route 526) and Beechwood Drive.

Township police and firefighters from the Washington Township Fire Department arrived to find a woman trapped in the driver's seat of a car that had been hit on its driver's side by another car, rescuers said.

That woman, whose injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening, was freed within about 10 minutes after firefighters cut away the driver's door. She was rushed by township ambulance to the trauma center at Capital Health System at Fuld hospital in Trenton.

The other driver was not hurt and declined medical attention, rescuers said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by Washington Township police.
