WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP -- The northbound
lanes of Route 130 have been reopened to traffic following a serious collision
that occurred just before 6:50 p.m. Tuesday. (See previous story.)
Two people were seriously injured in the crash.
Police said the accident occurred in the 1100 block of Route 130, just south of
Woodside Road, when the southbound car being driven by Millie Lamberty, 50, of
Trenton, veered across the highway's median and collided head-on with the
northbound car being driven by Vijaytash V. Singh, 30, of East Windsor.
Investigators are looking into the possibility that Lamberty may have suffered
some kind of medical emergency prior to losing control her car, police said.
They are also investigating what role, if any, alcohol or drugs played in the
crash, police said.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage, trapping Lamberty and Singh in their
seats. Firefighters from the Washington Township and Mercerville had to use
hydraulic cutting equipment to free them. In Singh's case, firefighters had to
cut away the entire roof of his car.
Once freed, both Lamberty and Singh were rushed by ambulance to the regional
trauma center at Capital Health System at Fuld hospital in Trenton, where they
are currently undergoing emergency treatment, police said.
The entire northbound side of Route 130 was closed to traffic until about 9:30
p.m. to allow township police and detectives from the Mercer County Prosecutor's
Office to investigate the accident.
Police said that investigation remains ongoing at this time under the direction
of Officer Barbara Borges.
Double Extrication in Washington Township
Washington Township (Mercer County)—A two car head on accident sent two people to the trauma center with serious injuries on April 10, 2007. The accident occurred just north of the Washington Township Fire Department on Route 130 just before 7 p.m. when a car crossed the median strip and hit another car head on. Passers by stopped at the fire station and notified on duty staff to respond. Firefighters arrived within moments and found that both drivers of the cars were heavily entrapped and summoned a rescue from Mercerville Fire Department of Hamilton Township. Firefighters began extrication on the first car and had that driver out in about 10 minutes. Firefighters moved to the next car and extricated that person in about an additional 15 minutes. Both patients were taken by fire department ambulances and Mercer County paramedics to Capitol Health System at Fuld which serves at the local trauma center.
The Washington Township Police Department and the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the crash. Route 130 was closed for about two hours while the accident was cleaned up and police conducted their investigation.
No further details were available at the time of this report.
