Trailer Fire on Interstate-195

On Sunday October 30, 2005, firefighters from the Washington Township Fire Department responded to a reported fire on Interstate 195 near Exit 6.  Arriving firefighters found a well involved trailer at the base of the ramp from the New Jersey Turnpike to I-195 Westbound.  The driver of the van towing the trailer told firefighters that he noticed smoke coming from the trailer after passing through the EZ Pass lanes at Exit 7A on the Turnpike.  The driver and several passers-by had attempted to fight the fire with extinguishers prior to calling the fire department.  The trailer was fully loaded with boxes of plastic model cars and VCR tapes.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze but remained on scene for almost an hour for extensive overhaul.  The ramp from the Turnpike toll plaza to I-195 West was closed during the duration of the incident causing traffic to back-up on the Turnpike for several miles.
