WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - A man was killed yesterday morning when his car entered Route 130 traffic from a side street and was broadsided by another car, police said.

The dead man's name was withheld yesterday because his family had not been notified. He is in his 30s, police said, and was driving alone.

At 11:30 a.m., the man's car entered the lane of travel from Voebel Road to Route 130 south and was struck by a car driven by Keith Bernstein, 24, of Philadelphia, said police Lt. Dominick Botteri. Bernstein was driving in the right lane.

Officers are investigating why the man's car entered Route 130 traffic after stopping, or nearly stopping, on Voebel Road as it approached the intersection, Botteri said.

Bernstein swerved his car to attempt to avoid the collision. Botteri said. Both cars came to rest in the grass median.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Bernstein initially declined medical attention from authorities, but later was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton for observation, Botteri said.

Route 130 south was closed from North Main Street to Church Street crossroads for about two hours.

The Washington Fire Department, Mercer County Prosecutor's Office and the state Department of Transportation's critical incident team, which conducted traffic control, responded to the crash.

According to Washington Township Police Lt. Dominic Botteri, the unidentified man, believed to be in his 30s, was traveling from Voelbel Road in the Windsor section of the township, onto Route 130 when the fatal accident occurred.

Police say as the man approached Route 130 in his 1989 Chevrolet Barreta, he was stopped or was in the process of stopping at a stop sign when he started across the Route 130 lanes in an attempt to proceed north.

The Hightstown man failed to yield to a car driven by Keith Bernstein, 24, of Philadelphia.

Bernstein swerved, police said, but struck the Baretta. The impact sent both cars more than 100 feet down Route 130 before coming to a rest in the center median.

The accident forced the closure of both lanes on Route 130 from North Main to Church streets for more than two hours yesterday.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead on the scene by the Mercer County Medical Examiner.

Police are withholding his name pending notification of his family.

Bernstein was transported to RWJ University Hospital at Hamilton, officials of which did not return calls concerning his condition.

Washington Township Fire Rescue and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Accident investigation team are assisting Sgt. Scott Texidor and Ptl. Richard Karkovice in the investigation.

Police say speed, weather were not a factor.
