WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - One man was seriously injured after a tractor- trailer swerved into oncoming traffic on North Main Street yesterday morning and crashed into his car, police said.

The driver of the car, whose name was not known yesterday by police, was traveling north around 9:30 a.m. when a tractor-trailer driven by another man whom police did not identify slammed into the car head on, Lt. Dominick Botteri said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but Botteri said police believe the truck driver veered into oncoming traffic because he thought he was unable to slow his 18-wheeler down to the speed of the vehicles in front of him.

After the initial collision, the car slid 20 to 30 feet before hitting a utility pole, Botteri said.

The victim was entrapped and the Washington Township Fire Department was called to free him, Botteri said.

He was taken to Capital Health System at Fuld hospital in Trenton with serious injuries, police said.

The truck driver did not suffer significant injuries, Botteri said
