WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — An accident involving a tractor-trailer and
nine other vehicles snarled traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike for much of the
day Wednesday.
The crash, which happened shortly after 10 a.m. north of Interchange 7A, created
an 18-mile backup southbound, and a seven-mile backup northbound, and forced the
closure of two southbound lanes, said Joseph Orlando, a spokesman for the New
Jersey Turnpike authority.
No one was killed, but seven people required hospital treatment for their
injuries, none of which were life-threatening.
"We already had a mile of traffic prior to the accident because of everyone
trying to get off at Great Adventure," Orlando said.
The tractor-trailer, which overturned in the crash, was righted at about 1:30
p.m., and lanes were expected to be reopened shortly afterward, Orlando said.
At 3:45 p.m., southbound delays were still between 15 to 18 miles, and
northbound delays were five miles.
