HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. —A small fire erupted in a processing oven at Sun Chemical Corp. on Route 130 yesterday morning, but the building's sprinkler system put out the fire before firefighters arrived, officials said.

A hazardous materials team responded around 12:30 a.m., but the chemical involved in the fire proved relatively harmless, Capt. Aaron Heller said.

An emergency worker for the company arrived at the building in the 500 block of Route 130 shortly after firefighters from Groveville Fire Co. and told them that the chemical known as "barium lake" is a powdery pigment used in cosmetic products, Heller said.

After stopping large amounts of barium lake - which is also known as Red No. 6 - from entering the drainage system, firefighters aired out the building. The chemical and the fire had filled the area with noxious fumes that could have been harmful if breathed in, Heller said.

No injuries were reported, he said.

Firefighters from Groveville, Whitehorse and Rusling fire companies in Hamilton along with the Washington Township Fire Department were at the scene for about three hours.
