MILLTOWN, N.J. —A four-vehicle accident injured 25 people Wednesday afternoon when a bus slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike, state police said. (The Washington Township Fire Department responded with an ambulance to provide assistance at the accident scene)
The bus, which is owned by Monroe Bus Corp., of Monroe, N.Y., was heading south on the Turnpike and its driver, who was not identified, failed to stop with slowing traffic around 12:10 p.m., police said.
The crash occurred about three miles south of Exit 9 for New Brunswick and caused slight traffic problems for a short time, police said.
The 18-wheeler hit by the bus then rear-ended a box truck, which bumped another tractor-trailer, police said.
Twenty-three people on the bus suffered minor injuries and were transported to area hospitals, spokesman Sgt. Kevin Rehmann said. The victims were from Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, Arizona, New York, California and Australia.
Two Pennsylvania truck drivers also suffered minor injuries, the accident report said.
A message left at Monroe Bus Corp. was not returned yesterday.
Troopers from Cranbury Station are handling the investigation.
