WEST WINDSOR - About 40 firefighters from several neighboring towns responded to a large brush fire that broke out here yesterday and took hours to contain, fire officials said.

Firefighters were called to a large wooded area between Old Trenton and Southfield roads about 11:30 a.m., said Gary Tindall, chief of West Windsor Fire Co.

When firefighters arrived, they found about 10 acres burning, Tindall said. It took about two hours to bring the fire under control and firefighters were still at the site at 4:30 p.m., he said.

No buildings were threatened by the blaze, which did not cause any serious traffic problems, he said.

The low-burning fire was fast-moving and burned mostly brush and felled trees. Firefighters reached the blaze by driving down dirt paths meant for all-terrain vehicles.

No one was injured in the fire. Firefighters contacted yesterday did not know who owns the property.

It was unknown what caused the fire yesterday. It remains under investigation, Tindall said.

West Windsor, Princeton Junction, East Windsor, Washington Township, Hightstown, Plainsboro and Mercerville fire companies responded to the site, along with the U.S. Forestry Service and the East Windsor and West Windsor rescue squads.
