Winds whip brush fire in woods near Sven Drive
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP (MERCER)--High winds helped fan a brush fire in the woods off of Sven Drive at 6:14 p.m. on Friday May 4, 2002. Firefighters arrived in 4 minutes and contained the 1 acre fire within 9 minutes using shovels, brooms and water packs. The fire department's brush fire unit was called to the scene to help mop up and extinguish hot spots. Within an hour after arrival all hot spots were moped up and the fire was considered completely extinguished The fire is labeled "suspicious" and is under investigation.

Wind-fanned fire sweeps woods

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - A fire fanned by last evening's gusting wind charred about an acre of woods behind a house in the Beechwood Acres development, township firefighters reported.
The fire off Sven Drive was reported about 6:15 p.m. Township firefighters said they contained the blaze in about 15 minutes and extinguished the fire in about an hour.
The fire, which burned leaves, tree stumps and rubbish, was of suspicious origin, firefighters said, and is under investigation by township authorities.
